PROCEDURE OPTIMIZATION FOR DETERMINATION OF PERFLUOROOCTANE SULFONIC ACID (PFOS) AND PERFLUOROOCTANOIC ACID (PFOA) IN PAPER – BASED FOOD PACKAGING SAMPLES

Abstract

In this study, a method for simultaneous determination of perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) in paper-based food packaging was validated by liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The paper samples were extracted with ethanol/water (1:1, v/v) mixture at 70 °C for 2 hours by using an incubator shake, filters before LC-MS/MS analysis. Limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification(LOQ) of both PFOS and PFOA was 0.2 and 0.02 ng/mL, method detection limit (MDL) and method quantification limit (MQL) of both PFOS and PFOA was 0.11 and 0.28 ng/g, respectively. The mean recovery for PFOS was 76 %, PFOA was 113 %, and repeatability (RSD) was 0.11 % and 0.22 %, respectively. The method was applied to analyze nine paper samples, however, PFOA and PFOS were not detected in any of these samples.
