Thin layers of ZnO–SiO2 nanocomposites doped with Er3+ were prepared by sol-gel method and spin-coating process. The structure and morphology of the thin films as a function of annealing temperature were studied and analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Upon annealing temperatures at 700 oC, we observed emission peaks at around 1540 nm assigned for the 4I13/2 -4I15/2 transition of Er3+ ions.
