EFFECT OF GROOVE TYPES ON LONGITUDINAL SHRINKAGE IN BUTT JOINT FOR GMAW PROCESS
Abstract
This paper presents effect of groove types on longitudinal shrinkage in butt joint using Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW). Comsol software is applied to build a thermal model and determine longitudinal shrinkage of single V-groove and bevel-groove butt joints under changing groove angle and root opening. Results indicate that the longitudinal shrinkage increases with an increase in the groove angle and root opening. For cases of 0 mm root opening, the longitudinal shrinkages of single V-groove butt joints are greater than that of bevel-groove butt joints. Hence, a comparison of simulation and experimental results of a previous study also finds that both estimated shrinkages of two butt joints are in agreement with the experimental measurements corresponding to the same conditions. From these results, one can be said that the simulated model and setting heat source as well as the boundary conditions are consistent with the actual experimental conditions. Therefore, current simulation method can be used to predict and evaluate effect of not only butt joint types but also welding conditions on the shrinkage of workpiece.
